Remember the bodybuilder and professional wrestler ‘ The Great Khali’, yes, he is the one who has been roped in as their brand ambassador by Big Flex Nutrition. Big Flex nutrition is an Indian company known for its wide range of supplements. It claims to be the only brand that offers a third-party lab-tested and certified reports for all its nutritional supplements.

Recently, Big Flex has launched a protein bar ‘Big Flex Protein Choco Bar’,  which is an addition to ‘The Great Khali Series’ of health and fitness products. This zero trans fat, fruit and nut protein bar is designed to serve as a pre-workout meal rich in protein, vitamins and minerals with added amino acids to boost your workout performance. Let’s have a detailed review of Big Flex Protein Bar, to check if it is worth all the hype surrounding it!

Nutrition Profile

No information about the sources used to derive protein or any other ingredients contained in the bar has been put up on the official website by the manufacturer. With only 6.83 g of protein in each serving of a bar of 35 g, let’s have a quick review of its other nutrition facts

Nutrition facts (for each bar of  35 g)

Taste

The bar is available in only 1 flavour and that’s Big Flex Protein Chocobar, Chocolate being an all time favorite flavour for most of us. With some fruits, nut, chocolate and nature identical flavours, this bar appeals the taste buds of many. If refrigerated, you may want to bring back the bar to room temperature before consumption for better taste. The upper crust is slightly hard in texture with layers of chocolate surrounding it. The bar gives you a rich taste of chocolate with some nuts added to it.

Effectiveness

The nutritional content of the bar is quite ordinary. Although the bar is meant to boost your workout performance, it does not contain anything special to enhance performance. The protein content of the bar is quite low as compared to other protein bars in the segment. With only 6.83 g of protein per serving of 35 g, it hardly meets the optimum level of protein per serving. The manufacturer has not given any information on sources used to derive protein. Hence the effectiveness of protein content in the bar is questionable. With 8.4 g of sugar, 17 g of carbs and 4.35 g of fat in each serving of 35 g, it fails to impress those who are calorie conscious or who want to build lean muscle mass or are on a weight loss diet.

Quality

Since not much information pertaining to the sources of protein used, or type of oil, sugars, or any other ingredients used in making of this product is available, whether the quality of this protein bar is optimum is doubtful. Since all the supplement products of Big Flex are third party lab-tested, quality can somewhat be assured of. However for the protein bars, nothing has been mentioned about third party lab-testing. To trust this product with the brand value of Big Flex is the only choice a consumer is left with.

Big Flex Protein Bar Side-effects

There have been no side effects reported so far. However, since the bar contains Gluten, its is advisable for those allergic or sensitive to Gluten to avoid it. Also since the bar contains 8.4 g of sugar with every serving of 35 g, those diabetic should consult their dietitian before consumption.

Price/ Value

The bar is quite low priced targeting the Indian audience. INR 750 for a pack of 15 bars that makes it INR 50 per bar. This is quite easy on pocket, as a pre-workout meal replacement bar. However, whether the nutritional content provides any any real value is doubtful.

6.4 Total Score
Average

Due to the lack of information on ingredients used as sources to derive protein, the quality of protein along with the low proportion of protein is something users are left to wonder about. Since there are no artificial sweeteners used, the bar contains added sugars which can make the users apprehensive about consuming it. Also, the bar has some extra calories and fats, without which the bar would have been better preferred by those who are calorie conscious.
